This stunning geological formation features 60-foot tall hexagonal basalt columns created by slow-cooling lava around 100,000 years ago. The columns form a nearly perfect wall of natural architecture, with Rainbow Falls just 2 miles downstream adding to the spectacle. Summer access requires a mandatory shuttle from Mammoth Mountain due to road restrictions, though early morning and evening private vehicle access is sometimes allowed.
The monument sits at 7,600 feet elevation and is typically accessible June through October, depending on snow. Winter access requires snowshoes or skis for the 7-mile trek from the Minaret Vista parking area. The short trail from the road to the base of the postpile is wheelchair accessible.
