Mammoth Lakes Dispersed Camping Sherwin Creek Road
Sherwin Creek Road climbs west from Highway 395 through several miles of scattered dispersed camping spots in Jeffrey pine forest. Most sites sit along the creek with decent privacy between rigs, fire rings already in place, and mountain views toward the Sherwin Range. Popular with climbers heading to the nearby crags and overlanders wanting free camping close to Mammoth’s resupply options.
Road is gravel for the first few miles, turning to rough dirt as you climb higher. Any vehicle can access the lower sites, but the better spots with more privacy require high clearance. Gets busy on summer weekends and during climbing season. Creek provides water but requires treatment. Fire restrictions typically in effect July through September.
