Denali Highway — Tangle Lakes BLM Dispersed Camp

The Tangle Lakes area sits near Mile 21 of the Denali Highway, roughly 21 miles west of Paxson, and is managed by BLM. Pull-offs along the lakes and river channels give you flat, open tundra camping with stunning views toward the Alaska Range. No facilities, no signage marking specific sites — just you, the willows, the loons, and an enormous sky. The area is popular with fly fishermen chasing Arctic grayling and with hunters in the fall. Expect company on summer weekends but it spreads out fast in this terrain.

Access is straight off the Denali Highway gravel — no spur required for most pull-offs. Road conditions vary; the highway runs gravel its entire 135-mile length and can be washboard or rough after heavy rain. A high-clearance vehicle handles it fine in summer. Bugs are legendary in June and early July — bring your best head net and don’t argue with them. Season runs roughly late May through September.
