Denali Highway — Landmark Gap Lake Tundra Dispersed Camp
Landmark Gap Lake sits roughly mid-highway along the Denali Highway, one of Alaska’s great gravel roads, and the surrounding tundra flats are well-known among overlanders as a legitimate dispersed camp zone. Pull off the gravel onto firm tundra — flat, open, with unobstructed views of the Alaska Range to the south. No facilities, no signs, no fee. The silence here is something else. Expect ptarmigan, caribou, and the occasional grizzly working the hillsides. Fire rings are absent because there’s almost no wood — bring a stove.
The Denali Highway (Alaska Route 8) is gravel end-to-end and runs 135 miles between Paxson and Cantwell. It’s open roughly late May through October, though shoulder-season mud can be serious. High-clearance is strongly recommended — washboard and sharp rocks will punish low-profile tires. Stay on established pull-offs or compacted tundra to avoid tearing up fragile vegetation. No cell service out here. Fuel at Paxson or Cantwell before you roll.
