Denali Highway — Clearwater Creek Dispersed Camp

Near Mile 105–108 west of Paxson, Clearwater Creek runs off the Alaska Range flanks and crosses close to the Denali Highway. The terrain here opens up into classic high-tundra bench country — low willows, scattered spruce, and massive sky. Several pull-off areas allow vehicle camping right on the bench or down near the creek drainage. It’s quieter than the Tangle Lakes end of the highway and the kind of spot where you might go two full days without seeing another rig. Grayling fishing in Clearwater Creek is well-regarded.

No facilities whatsoever. Carry all water and treat creek water before drinking. The gravel road runs nearby but this far west the surface can be rougher — expect some rough patches and possibly standing water after rains. High-clearance two-wheel drive handles it in dry conditions; 4WD gives you options when it’s wet. Shoulder seasons (May, September) bring soft shoulders and possible snow at any time. Plan fuel around Cantwell to the west and Paxson to the east — nothing in between.
