These twin sandstone spires tower above the surrounding prairie exactly as Oregon Trail emigrants saw them 170 years ago. Courthouse Rock stands 400 feet tall with Jail Rock nearby, both carved by wind and water from the ancient Brule clay formation. A short dirt road leads to a parking area with interpretive signs and decent hiking trails to the base of both formations.
Located about 5 miles south of Bridgeport on a well-maintained county road. The site has vault toilets but no other facilities. Best photographed in early morning or late afternoon light. Popular with rock hounds hunting agates in the surrounding area.
