Clonmacnoise Monastic Site
Clonmacnoise stands as one of Ireland’s most important early Christian sites, founded by Saint Ciarán in 544 AD on the banks of the River Shannon. The sprawling complex includes a cathedral, eight churches, two round towers, three high crosses, and over 200 grave slabs dating from the 7th to 12th centuries. The visitor center houses original high crosses and provides context for exploring the outdoor ruins.
The site sits just off the R444 about 7km south of Shannonbridge. Large car park accommodates overlanding rigs easily. Open year-round with extended summer hours. Early morning or late afternoon visits offer the best light and fewer tour buses from nearby cities.
