Chyulu Hills National Park — Ol Donyo Sabuk Plateau Dispersed Camp
The Chyulu Hills are one of the youngest volcanic ranges on earth, and camping on the open plateau here feels like it. Thick Afromontane forest gives way to rolling grassland studded with cinder cones. Elephant, buffalo, and lion move through regularly — this is genuine wilderness, not a tamed circuit. You’re inside KWS-managed Chyulu Hills National Park, which means a ranger or armed scout is a hard requirement, not a suggestion. No formal sites, no signage — you pick your ground, set up, and watch the sky go dark fast at altitude.
Access from Mtito Andei on the A109 takes you north via the Kibwezi–Chyulu track — 4WD essential, conditions degrade fast in the long rains (April–May, October–November). Carry all water. No cell signal inside the hills. Coordinate entry permits and ranger escort with KWS Chyulu Hills Gate before departure.
Youngest volcanics in Africa, Kili on the horizon.
