Cholla Cactus Garden — Joshua Tree National Park Transition Zone

Cholla Cactus Garden sits at roughly 1,770 feet in the lower Colorado Desert section of Joshua Tree, about 20 miles south of the main park corridor. A short nature loop winds through a thick stand of Cylindropuntia bigelovii — the so-called teddy bear cholla, which is anything but cuddly. The backlit late-afternoon glow through these cactus is genuinely surreal, and the transition from the higher Mojave boulder fields to this lower Sonoran zone is stark and worth noticing. If you’re running the park south-to-north or using the Cottonwood entrance, this is a mandatory stop.

Parking is paved, accessible to all vehicles, with a pit toilet on site. No shade structures — it bakes in summer. Morning and late afternoon are ideal light. Stay on the trail; cholla spines detach and embed easily in skin, fabric, and tires. Park entry fee applies. No camping. Cell signal is minimal in this lower section of the park.
