Chimney Peak Recreation Area Dispersed Camping

High-desert dispersed camping beneath the towering Chimney Peak with endless views across the Kern River Valley.

This BLM dispersed area sits at moderate elevation in the southern Sierra foothills, offering scattered camping spots among pinyon pines and granite boulders. Sites accommodate everything from tents to large RVs, with most spots providing natural windbreaks and privacy. The area sees moderate use from rock hounds, hunters, and overlanders seeking respite from crowded established campgrounds.

Access via Chimney Peak Road requires high-clearance 2WD at minimum, with some rougher spots favoring 4WD. No facilities beyond fire rings at some sites. Popular with hunters during deer season. Snow closes higher elevations from December through March.
