This sprawling BLM area follows the broad Kelso Valley between the El Paso and Rand Mountains, offering dozens of dispersed sites along dirt spurs off the main valley road. Sites range from sheltered spots near Joshua trees to wide-open desert flats suitable for large groups. The area attracts desert enthusiasts, stargazers, and overlanders seeking true solitude away from established recreation areas.
Access via Kelso Valley Road from Highway 14 near Red Rock Canyon. Most sites accessible to any vehicle, though some require high-clearance for better positioning. No facilities whatsoever. Fire restrictions typically in effect May through September. Winter nights can be surprisingly cold despite the desert setting.
Vast desert valley camping beneath star-filled skies.
