Catahoula National Wildlife Refuge
This massive refuge stretches along the Ouachita River bottoms, offering some of the best waterfowl habitat in north-central Louisiana. The auto tour route winds through cypress swamps and hardwood forests, with several pullouts for wildlife observation. Primitive camping is allowed in designated areas during hunting seasons with proper permits — mostly used by waterfowl hunters but open to overlanders seeking a wild experience.
Access is via gravel roads that can get soft after rain. The refuge office in Rhinehart provides maps and current conditions. Best visited during fall and winter when migratory birds are present and roads are more passable.
