Camping Municipal de Futaleufú — Frontera Patagónica Basecamp
Futaleufú’s municipal camp sits right on the fringe of one of Patagonia’s most dramatic small towns, hemmed in by the turquoise Río Futaleufú and jagged peaks that look straight out of a calendar. It’s the go-to overnight stop for overlanders staging a run into the Palena valley or threading the backdoor passes toward the Carretera Austral. Basic facilities — toilets, some covered shelters, fire rings in season — and a vibe that’s more working-class Patagonian than polished tourist resort. You’ll share the site with Chileans, Argentines, and the occasional heavily-laden 4×4 crew. Town is walkable, so resupply, fuel, and a proper meal are all within reach before the pavement ends.
Access is straightforward via Ruta Provincial 17 from Esquel or directly from the Argentine-Chilean border crossing at Paso Futaleufú. Busy in January–February. Off-season it’s quiet and often self-service — have small Argentine pesos ready. Confirm current rates at the municipality as pricing shifts seasonally.
Last basecamp before the Palena frontier.
