Balanced Rock Garden of the Gods
This 700-ton sandstone boulder balances impossibly on a narrow pedestal, creating one of Colorado’s most photographed landmarks. The crimson Lyons sandstone formation rises 190 feet from the valley floor, part of the dramatic uplifted formations that make Garden of the Gods a geological wonder. Pikes Peak’s 14,115-foot summit provides a stunning backdrop, especially when snow-capped against blue sky.
The paved road through the park handles any vehicle, with multiple pullouts for photos. Early morning and sunset offer the best light as the red rocks glow against Pikes Peak. Summer brings crowds but also thunderstorms that create dramatic skies. Free admission and open year-round, though winter ice can make some trails treacherous. Rock climbing is prohibited on Balanced Rock itself to preserve this fragile formation.
