Alamo Lake State Park

Remote desert reservoir with developed camping and boat launch, popular with snowbirds seeking warm winter solitude.

This state park sits around a 8,500-acre desert lake created by the Alamo Dam on the Bill Williams River. The campground offers 250 sites spread across several loops, most with electric hookups and many with lake views. It’s a magnet for snowbirds from November through March, but surprisingly quiet the rest of the year. Fire restrictions are common April through June due to extreme heat and dry conditions.

Access is via 38 miles of paved road from either Wenden or US 60, but the final approach feels genuinely remote through classic Sonoran desert. The park store stocks basic supplies and ice. Lake levels fluctuate dramatically based on Colorado River allocations, sometimes leaving boat ramps high and dry.
