Lander Road to South Pass — Wyoming’s Oregon Trail High Desert Crossing via Atlantic City

South Pass is the only low-grade crossing of the Continental Divide on the entire Oregon-California-Mormon Trail, and the road that reaches it from Lander still follows the original wagon ruts in places. From Lander, head south on Wyoming Highway 28 then cut west onto Atlantic City Road, dropping into the dry gulch where a population of 2,000 miners once pulled gold from Rabbit Gulch and Spring Gulch in the 1860s. The town of Atlantic City is still there — barely — with a handful of occupied structures, a legendary bar, and mine tailings scattered across the hillsides. From Atlantic City the route continues southwest across open sagebrush bench to South Pass City State Historic Site, then climbs the last easy miles to the actual divide at South Pass, where a BLM marker sits in the middle of nowhere and the wind never stops.

This is a straightforward high-clearance route — graded gravel and two-track, no serious technical obstacles in dry conditions. A stock 4WD or even a capable AWD handles it fine outside of winter. The real enemy is weather: spring mud and winter snow close the upper sections from November through May most years. No permit required. The South Pass City historic site has seasonal water; carry your own beyond that. Cell service is nonexistent past Lander. Dispersed camping is available on adjacent BLM land throughout the corridor. Fill fuel in Lander; there is nothing between Lander and Rock Springs on this route.
