Lake Mackintosh to Zeehan via Heemskirk Track — Tarkine Coastal Wilderness Back Road

The Heemskirk Track punches west from the Pieman River country toward the wild Southern Ocean coastline, threading through some of the most intact temperate wilderness left on the planet. Starting near Granville Harbour and pushing inland across the Heemskirk Range, the track crosses several unnamed creek fords before dropping into the mineral-rich country surrounding historic Zeehan — a silver-mining ghost of a town that once called itself the Silver City. The buttongrass plains soak up rain like a sponge, and the track surface reflects that — expect boggy sections, deeply rutted clay, and creek crossings that can swell fast after weather rolls in off the Southern Ocean.

This is legitimate 4WD country. A well-set-up vehicle with a snorkel, good all-terrain tyres, recovery gear, and a high-lift jack is the minimum — a locker helps. There are no fuel stops between Queenstown and Zeehan, so tank up. Cell service is essentially non-existent. Best tackled in the drier window of November through April, though even then the west coast does what it wants. No formal permits required, but check Forestry Tasmania conditions before departure. What you get out here is silence, ancient rainforest, and a coast that doesn’t care you exist.
