Gallatin National Forest — Bear Creek Road Dispersed Camp

Bear Creek Road splits off US-89 south of Livingston and climbs into the Absaroka foothills along its namesake drainage. Dispersed camping is available on Gallatin National Forest land along the lower and mid reaches of the road — cottonwood creek bottoms give way to open sage benches with long views back toward the Yellowstone River valley. It’s a quieter alternative to the more trafficked corridors near Gardiner, and the kind of place where you’ll share the drainage with mule deer and the occasional moose rather than other campers. No developed facilities anywhere on the road.

Road surface starts as good gravel and degrades as you gain elevation — a stock 4WD handles the lower dispersed areas without drama, but the upper road benefits from high clearance. Creek crossings are minor but watch them in early June snowmelt. Cell signal fades fast. This is bear country; hang your food or use a canister. Season runs roughly May through October depending on snowpack.
