Swan Lake Flats — Yellowstone Northern Plateau Wetland Viewpoint

The flats sit at roughly 7,400 feet on the northern Yellowstone plateau, wedged between the Gardner River canyon to the north and the Gardner’s Hole thermal features to the south. Swan Lake itself is a shallow, open-sky pond set dead center in the valley — one of the few spots in the lower 48 where trumpeter swans nest reliably. In early morning the bison herds move through here in numbers that’ll stop you cold. Elk are common across fall. The views toward Bunsen Peak’s dark volcanic silhouette are as good as anything the park offers from pavement.

You’re driving through this on US-89 between Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris Junction — the flats are along that corridor. Pull-outs are available but fill fast in peak season. No formal facilities, no camping. Wildlife viewing is best at first and last light. Speed limit through here is enforced; bison on the road is a given, not a surprise.
