Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces Yellowstone National Park

Point of Interest

Massive white limestone terraces cascade down the hillside like frozen waterfalls, constantly changing as mineral-rich hot water flows over and deposits calcium carbonate. The terraces range from bone-dry and chalky white to actively flowing with steaming 160°F water that supports colorful heat-loving bacteria. Liberty Cap, a 37-foot-tall dormant hot spring cone, anchors the lower terraces. Unlike other Yellowstone thermal features, you can walk directly on many of the formations via boardwalks and limestone paths.

Main Terrace Drive provides vehicle access to the upper terraces, while the lower terraces connect to Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel area. Spring activity shifts constantly — terraces that flow one year may go dormant the next as underground plumbing changes. Best light for photography is early morning when steam contrasts against the white limestone. Some upper terrace areas close seasonally for elk calving.
