BLM Black Rock Desert — Calico Mountains Western Base Dispersed Camp

The Calico Mountains rise sharply out of the Black Rock Desert playa along their western flank, and the BLM open lands at their base offer classic dispersed camping with nothing but alkali flats and jagged volcanic ridges for company. You can park almost anywhere on firm ground at the playa edge — there’s no signage, no delineation, just BLM open desert. The sense of scale here is disorienting in the best way. Bring every drop of water you’ll need; there is absolutely nothing available. No facilities, no fire rings, no shade. Access from Gerlach via the main Black Rock Desert access road is on graded gravel and compacted playa — manageable for most high-clearance vehicles when dry. The playa surface becomes dangerously soft after rain and can trap even aired-down 4WD rigs. Avoid any period within a few days of significant precipitation. Cell service is nonexistent. This is the real thing — self-sufficient or stay home.
