Black Rock Desert Playa — BLM Dispersed Camping
The Black Rock Playa is a dry Pleistocene lakebed inside the Black Rock Desert–High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area. Camping here is dispersed and free: pull out onto the hard-baked alkali, pick a spot, and you’ll have more horizon than you know what to do with. The night sky is outrageous, and silence out here is the real thing. Hot springs along the playa edge, like Trego and Double Hot Springs, make good soaking stops. Bring all your water, shade, and a way to pack out every scrap. Wind can come up hard and fast, and alkali dust gets into everything.
The playa is only drivable when it’s dry. Spring and winter moisture turns it into a gumbo that will swallow a truck, so check conditions locally in Gerlach before you roll out. Never drive on a wet surface. The area closes around Burning Man at the end of August, so plan around that. Verify current rules with BLM before you go. Have a dirty day.
