Sparks Lake Campground — Deschutes National Forest

Sparks Lake is the real deal. Sitting at roughly 5,435 feet on the Cascade Lakes Highway with Broken Top and South Sister looming over the water, this camp earns its reputation fast. It’s a developed USFS campground with basic sites, vault toilets, and fire rings — nothing fancy, but the setting does the heavy lifting. Kayakers and anglers share it with hikers and overlanders, so expect company on summer weekends. It’s a first-come-first-served situation and fills by Friday afternoon in peak season.

Access is entirely paved via OR-46. Any vehicle can get here, but high-clearance rigs won’t feel underutilized heading out on nearby forest roads. No potable water on-site — fill up in Bend. The road is typically open June through October, snow-dependent. Mosquitoes can be savage in early summer near the lake edge. Worth every itchy moment.
