Clearwater National Forest — Weitas Creek Road Dispersed Camp

Weitas Creek drains the high Bitterroots on the north side of the Lolo corridor, and the road up it provides one of the quieter staging options for the eastern end of FR 500. Pull-offs along the creek bottom are shaded, flat enough for a long wheelbase, and positioned right next to moving water — handy for topping off if you have filtration. The forest here is dense and dark, the kind of old-growth Clearwater timber that makes you feel like you’re genuinely deep in the backcountry even if you’re not that far off US-12.

The Weitas Creek drainage branches off near Mussellshell Meadows, itself a well-known staging area for Lolo Motorway runs. Road quality into Weitas drops from gravel to rough dirt as you gain elevation — high-clearance recommended, 4WD useful if it’s been wet. Spring runoff keeps the creek lively well into June. Check road conditions with the Lochsa Ranger District; this drainage sees limited maintenance and can have downed timber across the road early season.
