Lolo Pass — Idaho-Montana Border Summit Viewpoint

Lolo Pass sits right on the Idaho-Montana state line along US-12 and marks the eastern gateway to the Lolo Motorway. The pass visitor center — run by the Clearwater National Forest — is a legit stop: maps, Forest Service staff, vault toilets, and real intel on current road conditions up on the Motorway. Elevation is 5,233 feet. The ridge views east into Montana and west into the Bitterroot drainage are exactly what Lewis and Clark saw, minus the snowpack confusion. Come summer, it’s busy with through-travelers on US-12, but the overlanding crowd peels off here onto FR 500.

The visitor center is typically open mid-June through Labor Day. This is your last reliable stop for trip reports and Forest Service condition updates before committing to the Motorway’s remote ridge. Cell service is spotty to none beyond this point. No fuel available at the pass — fuel in Lolo, MT or Kooskia, ID before you arrive.
