Engineer Pass — Alpine Loop Summit Viewpoint

Engineer Pass sits at roughly 12,800 feet on the Alpine Loop between Ouray and Lake City, and it earns every foot of elevation. The summit ridge opens up into full 360-degree views — Uncompahgre Peak, Wetterhorn, and a sea of 13ers and 14ers filling every compass point. The old mining road cuts right across the saddle and the remnants of the ghost town infrastructure from the Engineer Mountain mining district are visible on the descent toward Ouray. It’s one of the most dramatic high passes in the lower 48, full stop.

The road is shelf-road 4WD territory — not place for stock vehicles or nervous drivers. Deep snow keeps it closed well into June most years; check with Gunnison National Forest before committing. No services, no signage at the top beyond the pass marker. Afternoon thunderstorms build fast above treeline in July and August — be off the summit by noon if clouds are building.
