Skull Rock — Joshua Tree National Park Roadside Formation

Skull Rock is one of those formations that actually looks like what it’s named after — two hollow eye sockets worn into the granite by thousands of years of wind, rain, and chemical weathering. It sits right on the north side of Park Boulevard between the Jumbo Rocks area and the Twentynine Palms entrance, making it an easy pull-in for any rig. The trailhead here connects to the 1.7-mile Skull Rock Nature Trail that loops through classic Joshua Tree boulder country. It’s a good leg-stretcher and orientation stop before pushing further into the backcountry.

Paved parking, a short paved path to the rock, and interpretive signage. Crowds are consistent year-round given the location; early mornings keep it tolerable. This is also a useful navigation reference point — if you’re staging for Geology Tour Road or heading toward Cottonwood, you’ll pass right by. Park admission required. No camping at the pullout.
