Ruta del Litoral – Valparaiso Coastal Backroads

Chile's raw coastal wilderness above the Pacific

Moderate

The forgotten coastal tracks between Valparaíso and Quintero snake through Chile’s most dramatic seaside terrain, where the Andes meet the Pacific in a violent collision of rock and surf. These old mining and fishing roads claw along clifftops 200 meters above crashing waves, connecting secluded beaches like Playa Loncura and the hidden cove at Laguna Verde. The route threads between private property and naval zones, requiring local knowledge to navigate the maze of unmarked tracks that wind through eucalyptus groves and coastal scrubland.

Moderate difficulty with some technical rocky sections that demand high clearance and careful line choice. A stock 4WD handles most terrain, but bring recovery gear for loose sand approaches to beach camps. March through November offers the best conditions — summer crowds make some access roads impassable. No permits needed, but respect private property boundaries that shift with local politics. Dispersed camping is legendary on clifftop sites with Pacific sunsets, though water sources are scarce. This is Chile’s answer to Baja’s coastal runs, minus the tourist infrastructure and plus the raw Chilean character.
