Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest — Toiyabe Crest Trailhead Upper Dispersed Camp

Push your rig to the upper end of Kingston Canyon and you’ll find rough dispersed sites just below the Arc Dome Wilderness boundary, right at the Toiyabe Crest trailhead staging area. Elevation runs close to 7,000 feet here, meaning cooler nights even in midsummer, and you’re set to boot up and hit the trail at first light. The terrain is pinyon-juniper transitioning to open ridge — no lush forest canopy, but the canyon views behind you are worth it. No water, no toilets, no fire rings. Carry everything in and out.

The road in is rocky and rutted in the upper stretch — 4WD and solid clearance are necessary above the midway point, especially after monsoon season. Snow can close this road well into June and return by October; call the Austin Ranger District to confirm access. Site capacity is limited by terrain — a handful of rigs at most before you’re stacking up. Rig up your recovery gear before you head in; this is not a bailed-out-easily kind of camp.
