Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest — Reese River Valley Dispersed Camp

The Reese River Valley east of the Toiyabe Range is classic Great Basin isolation — sagebrush flats, rabbitbrush, and a horizon that goes forever. Dispersed camping along the lower forest road corridors off NV-376 puts you within striking distance of the Toiyabe Crest Trail without committing to the steep canyon roads. Sites are open and exposed with room for large rigs, trailers, and rooftop setups. No shade, no water, no facilities — bring everything. Wind is the main variable; it rips through here. Stars are exceptional.

Roads into the valley are generally dirt two-track in good condition when dry but can turn to grease after rain. High-clearance 2WD handles most of it; soft soil near the river bottom may require 4WD after wet weather. Confirm road conditions with the Austin Ranger District before heading in. Season runs late spring through fall. Austin on US-50 is your closest fuel, food, and water source — don’t arrive thirsty.
