Canyon de Chelly Visitor Center — Chinle Hub

The Canyon de Chelly Visitor Center sits at the mouth of the canyon in Chinle and is the operational hub for the entire national monument. This is where you pick up free entry (no fee to enter the monument), grab printed maps of both North and South Rim Drives, get current road conditions, and — critically — arrange a Navajo Nation authorized guide if you intend to go anywhere below the rim. The staff here are knowledgeable and direct. A small bookstore carries regional geology and history titles worth grabbing.

Chinle itself has a grocery store, gas stations, and a motel — it’s your last reliable fuel and supply point before heading deep onto the Navajo Nation. The visitor center is the logical anchor point for anyone overlanding the South Rim Drive corridor. Hours vary seasonally — verify before you show up at 7am expecting it open.
