Naches Trail — Cascades Wagon Road to American River Canyon
The wagon road over the Cascades that still earns respect.
Emigrants used this corridor in 1853 to haul wagons over the Cascades — they lowered them down the steepest sections on ropes tied to trees. You’ve got a modern 4×4, but this trail will still make you think twice. Running from the Greenwater area west of Enumclaw down to Naches on the east side, the route crosses the Naches River multiple times — anywhere from knee-deep to door-panel deep depending on snowmelt and season. The upper sections near Pyramid Peak Pass are shelf road cut into steep sidehills, loose rock on the surface, and big consequences if you drift wide. This is the real Pacific Northwest backcountry, not a Sunday drive.
This is an expert-level trail that demands a capable, lifted 4×4 with lockers — a stock SUV will get hurt here. The river crossings are the main wildcard; run this after late July when snowmelt calms down, and check water levels before committing. The season is roughly mid-July through October before early snow shuts things down. No permit required for the trail itself, but Discover Pass is needed for Washington State DNR portions. Dispersed camping along the route. Cell service is gone once you leave the highway. Come prepared for self-recovery — you’re well off the grid out here.
