Willow Creek Campground — Lewis and Clark National Forest

Willow Creek Campground sits in the transition zone between the open plains of central Montana and the serious terrain of the Front Range — classic big-sky country giving way to real mountains. The camp is basic: vault toilet, fire rings, dispersed-style sites along the creek drainage. It attracts a mix of hunters, anglers, and overlanders using it as a fuel-stop night before pressing on toward Benchmark or deeper Sun River country. Not a destination camp, but a genuinely useful one when you need a spot that isn’t crowded and doesn’t require a reservation.

Access off Gibson Reservoir Road north of Augusta — gravel approach, fine for most stock rigs. The road north continues to Gibson Reservoir, which is worth the side trip for the sheer wall of the Front Range rising above the water. No treated water on-site; the creek runs but treat anything you pull from it. Cell signal is gone by the time you reach camp. Season mirrors the rest of the Front — June through October is your window, with snow possible early and late.
