Maletsunyane Falls — Semonkong Single-Drop Waterfall Viewpoint
The Maletsunyane Falls outside Semonkong are legitimately world-class — a sheer 192-metre (630 ft) plunge off the basalt escarpment into a deep sandstone gorge. In full flow after summer rains the thunder is audible from a kilometre away. The viewpoint at the gorge rim requires a short walk from the lodge area and rewards with an unobstructed look straight down. This is also the site of the world’s longest commercially operated abseil, so expect activity around the rim on peak weekends. The gorge itself can be accessed by pony trek — a Basotho experience worth every hour in the saddle.
Semonkong village is the access hub, reached via a well-worn dirt road from the A3 south of Maseru — plan 3-4 hours from Maseru in a high-clearance vehicle, longer after rain. The falls are most dramatic between December and March but the surrounding plateau is hikeable year-round. No entry fee to view the falls from the rim.
192-metre drop. Africa's tallest single-fall.
