Muztagh Ata Base Camp Viewpoint — KKH Kilometer 194
About 194km south of Kashgar on the KKH, a well-worn track branches west toward Subash and the established base camp area for Muztagh Ata. The mountain — called ‘Father of Ice Mountains’ — is a 7,546m dome of glaciers and the dominant landmark of the Western Kunlun. Expedition teams from multiple countries use this base camp every summer, and the approach road is passable to high-clearance vehicles in dry conditions. Even from the highway shoulder, the scale of the mountain is genuinely hard to process.
The base camp track is rough dirt and can be muddy after rain. High-clearance is advisable if you want to push closer. The highway itself is paved and wide at this point. Altitude here is around 3,800m — acclimatise before any off-highway exploration. No services whatsoever; fuel and supplies must come from Kashgar northbound or Tashkurgan southbound.
