Lesotho Border Post — Sani Top Upper Gate

Point of Interest

You’ve dragged your rig up one of the most technical mountain passes in southern Africa and now you pay the entry toll — a Lesotho visa stamp and a few minutes with a friendly officer at the summit post. At roughly 9,429 feet (2,874m) above sea level, this is among the highest border crossings on the continent. Sani Top Chalet sits metres away, where cold Maluti lager and a fireplace greet the weary driver. The Maloti highland plateau stretches east toward Mokhotlong, wide, treeless, and brutal in winter storms.

Hours mirror the South African side — typically 08:00–16:00. Lesotho vehicle fees apply; check current rates before crossing as they change periodically. Snow and ice can close the pass entirely June through August with zero warning — if clouds roll in fast, take it seriously. The descent back into KZN can be icier than the climb when temps drop.

Highest border crossing in Africa. Earn it.
