Sani Pass — Escarpment Wall Viewpoint

Point of Interest

Halfway up the Sani Pass switchbacks, the basalt wall of the Drakensberg escarpment rises above you and the Mkhomazana River valley drops away below in a way that stops most drivers cold. This isn’t a formal pullout — it’s the road itself demanding your attention. The layered cliff face, ancient lava flows stacked thousands of feet, frames the zigzag track you’re about to conquer. On clear mornings, visibility stretches back toward Underberg across the KZN midlands. On wet days, mist swallows it whole.

The climb is 4WD-only. There’s no barrier preventing a stop but be aware of other vehicles navigating tight hairpin sections — keep your truck tucked to the uphill side and watch your mirrors. Best light is early morning before cloud build-up. South African passport control sits at the base; Lesotho immigration is at the top near Sani Top Chalet.

The wall that earns your Lesotho stamp.
