Sturt’s Stony Desert — Gibber Plain Viewpoint

Point of Interest

There’s no signposted lookout here, but the gibber plain sections of the Strzelecki Track between Merty Merty and the Queensland border speak for themselves. The stones are heat-polished quartzite, iron-brown and close-packed, laid flat by millions of years of wind and flood with near-surgical precision. In the afternoon light the whole plain turns a deep orange-red. It’s one of those landscapes that makes you understand why early explorers thought they’d crossed into another world. Stop the rig, cut the engine, and stand in it for five minutes.

The most dramatic gibber sections sit roughly between the 200km and 350km marks north of Lyndhurst. The track surface here is firm and relatively fast but heavily corrugated — tyre pressures matter. In summer this plain becomes lethally hot with zero shade. Carry a minimum of 20L of water per person and don’t rely on any roadside water sources across this section. Mid-track conditions update: contact SA DEW Outback office or Innamincka Trading Post.
