Strzelecki Regional Reserve — Stuarts Creek Station Dispersed Camp
Once you’ve left Lyndhurst and the pavement behind, the Strzelecki Track pushes north into the reserve through open gibber plains and low dunes. The Stuarts Creek corridor — well-documented in HEMA’s Outback Australia map series — offers informal roadside dispersed camping on cleared ground beside the track, popular as a first-night stop before the track gets serious. It’s flat, exposed, and utterly empty. Don’t expect anything except red rock, low scrub, and the occasional wedge-tail eagle overhead.
Heading north from Lyndhurst the track surface varies from firm graded dirt to soft sand and deep corrugation depending on when it was last graded. High-clearance 4WD minimum; reduced tyre pressure recommended for sand sections. No water, no shade, no facilities. Your fuel and water should be topped at Lyndhurst — next reliable resupply is Innamincka, roughly 470 km north.
