Innamincka Regional Reserve — Cooper Creek Dispersed Camp
Cooper Creek is the reason people run the Strzelecki. Pull off anywhere along the creek frontage inside Innamincka Regional Reserve and you’ve got flat red-dirt camping beside one of the most storied waterways in outback Australia. Coolabah trees, pelicans, waterbirds, and the ghosts of Burke and Wills — it’s all here. No set sites, no fences, no numbers. You pick your spot and settle in. Busy during the May–August dry season when the grey nomad circuit peaks; genuinely quiet in shoulder months.
Access is via the Strzelecki Track or the Innamincka to Noccundra road — both dirt, both requiring a high-clearance 4WD after rain. Carry your own water; the creek water is not reliably potable. Firewood is scarce — bring your own. A 14-night stay limit applies inside the reserve. Register at the Innamincka Trading Post on arrival.
