Kinloch Hourn — Loch Hourn Road End and Knoydart Gateway Trailhead
Kinloch Hourn sits at the absolute end of the road — literally. The single-track from Invergarry is roughly 22 miles of tight, twisting tarmac with passing places, dropping steep into a hanging valley before reaching the loch head. It feels like the edge of the world, and it damn near is. This is the eastern staging point for foot access into Knoydart — one of Britain’s last true wildernesses. The hamlet has a small parking area, no services, and a bothy nearby at Barrisdale accessible only on foot or by boat. Expect red deer on the road at dusk.
High-clearance vehicles aren’t required, but the road punishes wide rigs. No fuel, no shop, nothing beyond the loch and the hills. The drive alone earns its place in any Scottish overland itinerary. Best late spring through October — the road can be brutal in ice and the passing places offer zero margin for error in snow.
End of the road. Start of Knoydart.
