Cairnwell Pass — A93 Glenshee Summit Road

The A93 over Cairnwell Pass sits at roughly 2,182 feet, making it the highest classified road in the UK. Flanked by ski infrastructure on the Glenshee side and wide-open Deeside moorland to the north, this is a genuine high-country crossing — not a mountain road by Alpine standards, but absolutely wild in winter and shoulder season. Snow poles line the verges for a reason. The views across the Grampian plateau are enormous, and the road itself is well-surfaced but narrow in stretches.

Best driven in summer or early autumn when the plateau is clear and the heather is burning purple. Winter closures are common and can be sudden — check Traffic Scotland before committing. The nearest fuel is Braemar to the north or Blairgowrie to the south. No camping at the pass itself, but this is a critical navigation point on any Cairngorms overland loop.
