Camino de la Costa – Peninsula Valdes Interior

Secret whale watching via salt pan crossings

Moderate

While most tourists stick to the paved perimeter of Peninsula Valdes, this coastal backcountry route cuts straight across the interior salt pans and scrubland to reach isolated viewing points where southern right whales breach just meters from shore. The track threads between massive elephant seal colonies at Punta Norte, requiring careful timing to avoid territorial bulls during breeding season. Salt-crusted flats give way to loose sand and rock gardens as you navigate toward the remote northern coastline where few vehicles venture.

High clearance is essential for the salt pan crossings and rocky coastal sections, though most stock 4WDs handle it fine in dry conditions. Avoid this route during winter storms when the salt flats become impassable mud. September through November offers peak wildlife activity but crowds the main roads – this interior route stays empty. Carry extra water and fuel; the nearest services are back in Puerto Madryn. The reward is having some of the world’s best whale watching to yourself, plus camping spots where the only sounds are crashing waves and elephant seal roars.
