The track that runs from the village of Svínoyar across the island’s interior and down to the ferry landing is brief but brutal — carved into hillsides above cliffs that drop sheer into the tidal races of Svínoyarfjørður, notorious among local fishermen as among the most dangerous stretches of water in the archipelago. The route crosses open heathland with no windbreak whatsoever; gusts exceeding 60 mph are not unusual, and the track surface alternates between loose gravel and exposed bedrock ledges. The lighthouse at the island’s east point is a worthy waypoint.
