Gásadalur Mountain Track — Bøur to Gásadalur via Vágar Upland
The track that time — and a tunnel — forgot.
Before the Gásadalur tunnel punched through the basalt in 2004, the only way into the village was over the mountain on foot or by boat. The old mule track and its rough 4×4 extension from Bøur still exist, climbing steeply up through the green upland pastures of Vágar before dropping toward Gásadalur and its famous Múlafossur waterfall, which free-falls directly into the Atlantic below the village. The surface is a mix of ancient stone track, compressed earth, and loose basalt — narrow enough in places that a full-size pickup’s mirrors clear the grass by inches. The drop-offs on the Gásadalur side are serious and the track is essentially unprotected.
This is a moderate-to-difficult drive depending on conditions — in dry summer weather a capable high-clearance 4WD manages it with care, but any moisture turns the basalt earth slick and the gradient punishing. The route is approximately 4.5 km and is used occasionally by local farmers for livestock access. No permit is required, but be aware you’re driving on working farmland — leave gates as you find them. The tunnel handles daily traffic now, which means this track sees almost no use and is easy to have entirely to yourself. Fuel in Sørvágur, about 7 km east. The waterfall view from above the village is reason enough.
