Enniberg Cliffside Track — Viðareiði to Enniberg Viewpoint via Viðoy North Coast
Europe's highest sea cliff, zero guardrails.
Enniberg on the northern tip of Viðoy is cited as one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, and the rough track that scratches its way up the island’s north coast from Viðareiði toward the cliff edge puts you somewhere between awe and genuine unease. The single-lane dirt and gravel track follows the ridgeline above the village, with exposed drops to the Atlantic on one side and raw basalt scree on the other. The route is largely unimproved — ruts, loose stone, and boggy sections in wet weather are standard. There is no formal viewpoint infrastructure at the top, just open moorland and the cliff edge. The Faroese call this kind of landscape útmark — outfield — and it’s as wild as the word implies.
High-clearance 4WD is essential; a lifted vehicle with all-terrain rubber handles this best. The track is not maintained for tourism — it exists for farming access and local use. In summer the ground firms up but the Faroese weather can turn the surface to mud within hours. No permit, no fee, and no services whatsoever. The nearest fuel and supplies are in Klaksvík on Borðoy, accessed via the Norðoyatunnilin undersea tunnel. Go early, watch the weather, and bring everything you need. The payoff is complete solitude and a cliff edge that will rearrange your sense of scale.
