Sornfelli Summit Road — Hvítanes to Sornfelli Military Radar Station via Streymoy Upland
749m of raw Atlantic exposure.
Sornfelli is the closest thing the Faroe Islands has to a proper summit drive, and it doesn’t pull punches. The road climbs from Hvítanes on the outskirts of Tórshavn through dense low cloud, past the Oyggjarvegur junction, and grinds up a single-lane gravel track to the old NATO radar installation at the top. At 749 metres, the views when the cloud lifts — which it does on its own schedule — stretch across Vágar, Nólsoy, and deep into the North Atlantic. The road surface is coarse gravel over basalt, with steep cambers and no guardrails. Wind is the real hazard here; gusts above 40 knots are routine and can physically push a vehicle sideways.
A capable 4WD with good all-terrain tyres handles this in dry conditions, but in wet or icy weather the basalt gravel becomes greasy and the track earns its respect. The road is classed as a mountain road and is gated in winter when conditions deteriorate. No permit needed, but check Faroese Road Administration (Landsverk) conditions before heading up. Tórshavn is minutes away for fuel and supplies. This is a short run — under an hour return — but the exposure and North Atlantic atmosphere make it worth every minute.
