Mourne Mountains — Silent Valley Reservoir Viewpoint
The Silent Valley sits in the heart of the Mournes, a reservoir carved out of granite moorland that feeds Belfast. The approach through Kilkeel brings you up into a landscape that shifts fast — hedgerows give way to open bog and the peaks of Slieve Binnian and Slieve Muck close in. The dam wall viewpoint is the money shot: still water, dark rock, no noise but wind. It earns its name. NI Water manages the site and there’s a small visitor centre at the car park.
The road in from Kilkeel is paved but narrow — wide trailers will have a rough time. The car park charges a small fee seasonally. Trail access into the high Mournes starts here. This is solid three-season territory; winter can bring ice on the upper tracks. No overnight camping at the site itself.
Granite, stillwater, and Northern Ireland's highest peaks.
