Croagh Patrick — Mayo Atlantic Summit Pilgrim Viewpoint
Croagh Patrick is hard to miss — it punches out of the Mayo landscape like a perfect pyramid above the town of Westport. The summit viewpoint over Clew Bay is genuinely spectacular: hundreds of drowned drumlins scattered across the bay like a handful of green islands, with Clare Island and the Atlantic beyond. It’s been a pilgrimage site for fifteen centuries, which means the trail is well-worn and the mountain is busy on Reek Sunday (last Sunday of July). The car park at Murrisk is the staging point — it’s a real car park, not a layby.
The path up is loose quartzite scree above the halfway point — boots required, not trail runners. From an overland perspective, the R335 approach from Westport along the south shore of Croagh Patrick is scenic driving in its own right. No permit or fee for the mountain. Car park at Murrisk fills early in summer. The summit cross and chapel are genuine landmarks worth the 2–3 hour return hike.
