North Barrule Ridge Road — Ramsey to Claughbane via Northern Upland Track
The Island's gnarliest northern ridge — earn those views.
At 1,854 feet, North Barrule dominates the northern sky above Ramsey Bay and its western approach track is one of the few routes on the Island that genuinely demands four-wheel drive and a bit of nerve. The run begins on the outskirts of Ramsey, pushing southwest on a farm lane through Claughbane Farm — one of the highest working farms in the north — before the trail opens onto the exposed ridgeline. This is classic British upland terrain: heather, exposed quartz-veined rock slabs, peat hags, and a wind that never stops. The track follows the Manx Telecom access road partway before the maintained surface ends and you’re picking your own line across the plateau toward the Beinn-y-Phott divide.
Honest assessment: this is a short but genuinely rough route with steep loose-rock sections on the upper approach and peat soft spots that will swallow axles in a wet winter. A properly equipped short-wheelbase 4WD with good all-terrain rubber is the minimum; recovery gear is smart. No permit is needed. Cell service is poor above 1,200 feet. Ramsey has fuel and food — stock up there. The northern panorama from the ridge — Scotland’s Galloway hills, the Mull of Kintyre, and Rathlin Island — is worth every rock that rattles under your sills. Best season June through August.
